Macau, along with Hong Kong is one of the two special administrative regions of the People’s Republic of China. Originally a Portuguese colony, Macau was handed back to mainland China in the late 1990’s shortly after Hong Kong.
Well known for its casinos and Grand Prix Macau is also a city of historical and cultural significance. The Historic Centre is listed by UNESCO and contains a range of colonial buildings dating back as far as the 16th Century. This weekend one of theses buildings will become the host of VAFA Macau, an international video art festival.
Built in 1770 Casa Garden was originally a villa for Manuel Pereira, a merchant and member of the Portuguese Royal Family. These days it is a public park and home to the The Fundação Oriente which will be hosting the festival for its duration.
The Festival is co-organised by AFA Macau and will run from November 12 to December 3, 2010. A selection of works will be shown in rotating screenings throughout the duration of the festival. My film “The Ultimate City” appears as part of the Reality Show programme which will be shown at 6:30pm on Saturday 13th, Tuesday 23rd and Tuesday 29th November 2010.
